Management Ebooks: "The Invisible Employee: Using Carrots to See the Hidden Potential in Everyone"

There is a crisis in business today: the invisible employee. Feeling threatened, ignored, and unappreciated, invisible employees fight back the only way they know how—by staying hidden in the corporate shadows, doing just enough to get by, grumbling about this and that, and passing these techniques along to new workers. After all, why bother shining when no one notices your achievements? Why bother trying when you could be let go in the next batch of layoffs?

A business fable packed with hard-won wisdom, The Invisible Employee follows a group of people who live and work together on a mysterious island. In this second edition—updated with new case studies and current survey results—managers learn how to combat one of the most common negative attitudes in business: that smart employees keep their heads down and never do more than is asked.

Bestselling authors Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton show how effective leaders change this mind-set by engaging their people in their cause—setting clear goals, encouraging productive behavior, and celebrating every success along the way. The end result is an organization of productive employees who feel noticed, valued, and appreciated. In other words, they feel visible.

In today's competitive environment, all of us are looking for the next big product, the next big capability or solution. But great managers are finding that recognizing people leads to a more engaged workforce and a more successful business. The Invisible Employee shows you how to bring out the hidden potential in your team and your business.

Management Ebooks: "McKinsey's Marvin Bower: Vision, Leadership, and the Creation of Management Consulting"

A wonderful book about a wonderful man. In many ways, Marvin's McKinsey framed the hypotheses in our own search for excellence-for example, passion for values, belief in people as the prime resource, and willingness to let people experiment. As well as I thought I knew Marvin, however, this remarkable book, drawing on the collective memories of those who worked most closely with him, taught me a ton about how extraordinary the man really was and what made him that way. Many have called Drucker the man who invented management; I think history will conclude that both he and Marvin Bower share that pedestal.

Marvin Bower became a legend, not just within McKinsey & Company, but within professional services and the business world more broadly. In everything he did and said, he embodied the professional approach and the importance of values. This book sheds remarkable insight on a remarkable man and on the power of constancy of purpose.

Management Ebooks: "The Most Successful Small Business in The World: The Ten Principles"

All too often, entrepreneurs begin a small business to create a sense of security. They become sole proprietors or perhaps employ only one or two people. The business becomes a perpetual existence, like a mechanic, a doctor, a therapist, or a retailer who does the same thing over and over again to generate a stream of income. The small businessperson fails to grow, marking time by repeating the sameservice in a perpetual cycle throughout the life of the business.

Gerber's ten principles will help you to break out of this vicious cycle before it starts in your new business. He'll help you to embrace the energy of exploration with a road map for taking your vision beyond the obvious. Only then can you build a company that provides continuous fulfillment and personal growth, and can expand its income, services, and positive contributions to your employees and community.

Gerber's ten principles will help you to:

  • Identify your company's essential "system"—its highly differentiated way of doing business that will be the cornerstone of your success
  • Build a business of great imagination; a self-reliant "reach" that will create economic certainty in any climate
  • Create a center of growth and learning for your employees, that will in turn develop your business beyond any standard thatformerly existed
  • Instill a higher purpose that can moveyourself, your business, and your customers to greater levels of fulfillment and growth

From identifying opportunities to viable business design to field-testing your ideas, Gerber offers a dynamic message for creating the most successful small business in the world—not only providing you with economic certainty, for which he believes all persons are capable, but empowering you to achieve your fullest potential.

Management Ebooks: "The 80/20 Principle: The Secret of Achieving More With Less"

In 1897, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, in his study of the patterns of wealth and income, observed that the distribution of wealth was predictably unbalanced. He first discovered this pattern in 19th-century England and found it to be the same for every country and time period he studied. Over the years, Pareto's observation has become known as the 80/20 principle.

Now Richard Koch takes a fresh look at the 80/20 principle and finds that the basic imbalance observed by Pareto 100 years ago can be found in almost every aspect of modern life. Whether you're investing in stocks, analyzing company sales, or looking at the performance of a Web site, you'll find that it's usually 20 percent that produces 80 percent of the total result. This means 80 percent of what you do may not count for much. Koch helps you to identify that 20 percent and shows you how you can get more out of your business, and life, for less.

Management Ebooks: "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity"

In today's world, yesterday's methods just don't work. Veteran coach and management consultant David Allen recognizes that time management is useless the minute your schedule is interrupted; setting priorities isn't relevant when your e-mail is down; procrastination solutions won't help if your goals aren't clear. Instead, Allen shares with readers the proven methods he has already introduced in seminars and at top organizations across the country. The key to Getting Things Done? Relaxation.

Allen's premise is simple: our ability to be productive is directly proportional to our ability to relax. Only when our minds are clear and our thoughts are organized can we achieve stress-free productivity. His seamless system teaches us how to identify, track, and-most important-choose the next action on all our tasks, commitments, and projects and thus master all the demands on our time while unleashing our creative potential. The book's stylish, dynamic design makes it easy to follow Allen's tips, examples, and inspiration to achieve what we all seek-energy, focus, and relaxed control.

Marketing Ebooks: "Top 20 Most Valuable Global Retail Brands"

This report helps illuminate the radical changes reshaping retail as shoppers, chastened by the recession and empowered with technology, think differently about what and how they purchase. Here are just three of many critical considerations:

First, brand is a prerequisite of retail success. How retailers build their brands impacts all aspects of their business. Brand is key to effective merchandising. It converts private label from a margin-building tactic to a strategic symbol of brand equity. Brand alone secures an enduring place in the mind of the consumer. It is fundamental to the supplier-retailer relationship.

Second, retailers own the conversation with shoppers. Through their loyalty programs and daily interactions with shoppers, retailers have the most authentic and perpetually updated understanding of the shopper. This knowledge is critical to suppliers who need to engage with their retailer customers to actively participate in the conversation.

Third, retail is becoming even more competitive. In developing markets, retailers face tough competition both from traditional outlets and the modern trade. In saturated “post-modern” markets, hyper competition for share of wallet has replaced expanding square footage as the engine of growth. Suppliers play a critical role in helping retailers succeed amid the local competitive forces.

This report elaborates on these considerations and many others. It provides the ingredients needed in order to thrive in this new retail environment: the best data, original insights and compelling ideas that will drive our businesses forward. Kantar Retail is pleased to provide this report. We believe that it will help you think differently about your business, its challenges and opportunities.
